Vancouver is a coastal city located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. It is blessed with a large natural seaport, making The Port Metro Vancouver a strategic link in the trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada, and London. Development carried on apace and the port is now the busiest and biggest in Canada. The largest industry in Vancouver is forestry, but the city has the reputation of an urban centre plonked in the midst of nature. Tourism is thus its second largest industry. It is the third largest film production centre in North America after Los Angeles and New York City. The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics were held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler, a resort community 125 km north of the city.
The annual value of trade done by the Port of Vancouver with over 130 different countries exceeds C$75 billion. Port activities generate $10.5 billion in gross domestic product and $22 billion in economic output. Vancouver has stayed with the times and grown into an important hub for software development, biotechnology and the film industry. However, Vancouver is amongst the least affordable cities in which to live in the nation, with the highest housing prices in Canada.
